Product Introduction

AISI 1020 carbon steel is a commonly used mild steel that is easily machinable due to its low carbon content. It is ideal for applications where high strength, toughness, and ductility are not required. AISI 1020 has a tensile strength of 420 MPa and a yield strength of 350 MPa. It also has good weldability and formability and can be easily welded using various welding processes. It is often used in the construction of shafts, gears, and various machine parts.

  • Chemical Composition: consists of carbon, manganese, and other elements like silicon, copper, and phosphorus. Mild Steel, on the other hand, also contains carbon and manganese, but in lower quantities than AISI 1020.
  • Mechanical Properties: The mechanical properties of both materials differ. AISI 1020 Carbon Steel has good tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation properties, making it suitable for applications that require high strength and toughness. Mild Steel has a low tensile strength and yield strength, but it is ductile and can be easily formed and welded.
  • Corrosion Resistance:  low to moderate corrosion resistance, and it is prone to rusting. However, mild steel has better corrosion resistance than AISI 1020 and is commonly used in corrosive environments.
  • Applications: various applications, including automotive parts, tools, and machinery components. Mild Steel is used in construction, transportation, and manufacturing industries due to its versatility and low cost.
  • Machinability: Both materials are easy to machine due to their low carbon content. However, AISI 1020 Carbon Steel has better machinability than mild steel.

Production Process

1. Raw material selection: The first step in the production process of AISI 1020 Carbon Steel is to select high-quality raw materials that are free of impurities. The most common raw material used in the production of AISI 1020 Carbon Steel is iron ore, which is mined from various locations around the world. Iron ore is then processed into steel by smelting it in a furnace.

2. Control of carbon content: The carbon content in AISI 1020 Carbon Steel is controlled to ensure that it remains at a low level. This is important because the carbon content affects the strength and ductility of the steel. The steel is manufactured by heating it to a high temperature and then adding carbon to it. The amount of carbon added is carefully controlled to keep it within the permissible limits.

3. Rolling and forming: Once the steel has been manufactured, it is rolled and formed into various shapes and sizes. This is done using rolling mills and other machines that can apply pressure to the steel to change its shape. The steel can be formed into sheets, bars, rods, or other shapes depending on its application.

4. Finishing: After the steel has been formed into its final shape, it is finished by polishing, sandblasting, or painting. This gives the steel a smooth surface and also protects it from corrosion and other environmental hazards.
