316 ss pipe performance and use

316 and 316L stainless steels are molybdenum containing stainless steels. With a maximum carbon content of 0.03, 316L stainless steel can be used in applications where annealing cannot be performed after welding and where maximum corrosion resistance is required.

Corrosion resistance: Corrosion resistance is better than 304 stainless steel, but also resistant to the erosion of the ocean and aggressive industrial atmosphere.

Heat resistance: 316 stainless steel in the range of 800-1575 degrees, can not continuously use 316L stainless steel carbide precipitation resistance is better than 316 stainless steel, available in the above temperature range.

Heat treatment: For the best corrosion resistance, the welded section of 316 stainless steel needs to be annealed after welding. 316L stainless steel, no post-weld annealing is required.

316L has a wide range of applications in the chemical industry because of its excellent corrosion resistance, 316L is also a derivative of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel, adding 2 ~ 3% Mo element. On the basis of 316L, many steel grades are also derived, such as 316Ti after adding a small amount of Ti, 316N after adding a small amount of N, and 317L is derived from increasing Ni and Mo content.

Most of the existing 316L on the market are American standard 316L stainless steel pipes produced in accordance with the American standard chemical grade 00Cr17Ni14Mo2 (C≤0.03, Ni 10.00 ~ 14.00, Cr 16.00 ~ 18.00, Mo 2-3) , Mn≤2.0, Si≤1.0, S≤0.030, P≤0.035)

The American standard stipulates that the Ni content of 316L is 10 ~ 14%, and the Japanese standard stipulates that the Ni content of 316L is 12 ~ 15%. According to the minimum standard, there is a 2% difference between the American standard and the Japanese standard in the Ni content, which is still quite huge in the price, so customers need to see clearly when purchasing 316L products, and the products refer to ASTM or JIS standards.

The Mo content of 316L makes the steel has excellent pitting resistance and can be safely used in halogen ion environments such as Cl-. Because 316L is mainly used for its chemical properties, steel mills have slightly lower surface inspection requirements for 316L (relative to 304), and customers with higher surface requirements should strengthen surface inspection efforts.

The market demand for 316 is not large, so steel mills generally only 316L, if you need 316, you need to order steel mills. Due to the considerable difference in price between 316L and 304, some bad traders will sell 304 as 316L. Since 304 does not have the ability to resist pitting, if pitting perforation will cause leakage, which will cause major safety accidents in the chemical industry, it is recommended that purchasing customers do a chemical composition analysis of the product to ensure safety.

316 and 316L also have differences in performance due to different C content. The higher the C content, the easier it is to induce intergranular corrosion, such as when welding. Higher C content will also increase the tensile and yield strength of 316L.
