To start the purging process, the first step is to clean the pipe's inner surface thoroughly using a suitable cleaning agent to remove any debris or contaminants. After cleaning, the pipe needs to be preheated to a temperature of about 150°C to minimize the risk of cracking or distortion during the welding process.

Once the cleaning and preheating are complete, the next step is to introduce a purging gas, usually argon or helium, into the pipe through one end while at the same time venting any remaining oxygen or air out through the other. The purging gas displaces the oxygen and other gases, creating a clean and oxygen-free welding environment.

The process of purging continues throughout the welding operation until the weld is complete, after which the purging gas continues to flow into the pipe until the weld cools down to room temperature. This final step helps to prevent oxidation and contamination of the weld.

When performed correctly, purging helps to ensure that SS pipe welds are of high quality, with no defects, and have excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appearance. Proper purging is critical to the overall success of the welding process, and it is essential to work with qualified and experienced professionals to ensure that the procedures are performed safely and effectively.
