The standard Mn13 high manganese steel, also known as Hadfield steel, was invented by the British Hadfield in 1882.

Mn13 has incomparable work hardening characteristics of other wear-resistant materials. Under the action of greater impact load or greater contact stress, the surface layer of the steel plate is produced work hardening, and the surface hardness is rapidly increased from HB200 to HB700, resulting in a high wear-resistant surface layer, while the inner layer of the steel plate austenite still maintains good impact toughness.
