42CrMo4 Forging temperature: 900-1100 °C, after forging in still air or sand as slow as possible cooling.

42CRMO4 Heat treatment

Normalizing: 850-880 °C, air-cooled

Soft annealing: 680-720 °C, cooling in the furnace

Stress relief: 450-650°C, air cooling

Hardening: 820-880 °C, oil or water quenching

Tempering: 540-680 °C, air-cooled

Mechanical properties of 42CrMo4 steel: The following are some mechanical properties of 4142 steel:

The tensile strength of this grade of alloy steel is expressed in Newtons per millimeter and it must be at least 1000 N/mm2 (MPa).

The elongation characteristics of 42CrMo4 steel vary with the heat treatment process and thickness, but are usually expressed as 11%.

42CrMo4 can be welded by all fusion and resistance methods. But it cannot be welded by the oxy-acetylene welding method.

The yield strength of this grade of alloy steel is expressed in Newtons per millimeter and it must be at least 550 N/mm2 (MPa).

The weldability of 42CrMo4 high-grade steel is very low. The process of preheating base steel to 200 to 300°C is extremely complex. The temperature should not exceed this range, as it will damage the chrome layer.

Alloy grade 42CrMo4 can be welded with the help of friction. However, precautions need to be taken to prevent the growth of unwanted weakened microstructure in the welding area.
