Quality 42CrMo4 Quenching and Tempering Steel

42crmo4 is a special grade of high steel that can be quenched and tempered. In the state of quenching and tempering, it can provide strong strength and toughness fusion. Different European standards cover the specifications of this steel in different forms and processing conditions. Induction hardening of steel is possible. The steel is usually supplied in the form of a mixture of microstructures, martensite and austenite. Special grades of this steel are M treated to provide good cutting properties.

42CrMo4 steel composition is as follows:

  • The maximum percentage of carbon (C) is 0. 45%, with a minimum percentage of 0.38.
  • The maximum percentage of manganese (Mn) is 0.9% and the minimum percentage is 0.60.
  • The maximum percentage of phosphorus (P) is 0.035%.
  • The maximum percentage of sulfur (S) is 0.035%.
  • The minimum percentage of chromium is 0.90% and the maximum percentage of chromium is 1.2%.
  • The maximum percentage of silicon (Si) is 0.40%.
  • The maximum percentage of molybdenum (Mo) is 0.30% and the minimum is 0.15%.
  • What is left is the iron (Fe) percentage, with almost no negligible impurities.
  • Mechanical properties of 42CrMo4 steel: The following are some mechanical properties of 4142 steel:
  • The tensile strength of this grade of alloy steel is expressed in Newtons/mm and must be at least 1000 N/mm2 (MPa).
  • The elongation of 42CrMo4 steel varies with the heat treatment process and thickness, but is usually 11%.
  • 42CrMo4 can be welded by all melting and resistance methods. However, it cannot be welded with the oxy-acetylene welding method.
  • The yield strength of this grade of alloy steel is expressed in Newtons/mm and must be at least 550 N/mm2 (MPa).
  • High quality steel 42CrMo4 has very low weldability. The process of preheating the master steel to 200 to 300°C is very difficult. The temperature should not exceed this range, as it will damage the chrome layer.
  • Alloy grade 42CrMo4 can be welded with the help of friction. However, precautions need to be taken to prevent the formation of harmful weakened microstructures in the welding area.
