Hardened And Tempered Steel Sae 1055 Spring Steel. It is also known as hardened and tempered steel due to the heat treatment process it undergoes to achieve its desired properties.

The hardening and tempering process involves first heating the steel to a high temperature to make it austenitic (able to dissolve carbon). The steel is then quenched (rapidly cooled) to transform the austenite into martensite, a very hard and brittle phase of steel. To improve its toughness and strength, the steel is then tempered by heating it at a lower temperature to allow some of the martensite to transform into a tougher and more ductile phase of steel.

The resulting sae 1055 spring steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio, high tensile strength, good fatigue resistance, and excellent spring properties. It is used in many applications, such as automotive springs, railway springs, safety valve springs, and clutch springs, among others.
