JIS G4051 S20C Carbon Steel

JIS G4051 S20C (also known as S20C steel) is a low carbon, medium tensile steel that is commonly used in the manufacture of machine parts, automotive components, and industrial machinery. S20C steel is often used in the manufacture of shafts, gears, axles, bolts, studs, and metal parts that require moderate strength and good toughness.

Chemical Composition:

The chemical composition of JIS G4051 S20C carbon steel is as follows:

- Carbon (C): 0.18-0.23%
- Silicon (Si): 0.15-0.35%
- Manganese (Mn): 0.30-0.60%
- Phosphorus (P): max 0.030%
- Sulfur (S): max 0.035%

Mechanical Properties:

The mechanical properties of JIS G4051 S20C carbon steel are as follows:

- Hardness: HB 160
- Yield strength: 245 MPa
- Tensile strength: 410 MPa
- Elongation: 25%
- Reduction of area: 55%
- Modulus of elasticity: 200 GPa

Heat Treatment:

JIS G4051 S20C steel can be heat-treated at 870°C to 900°C for around 2 hours and subsequently quenched in oil or water. Tempering of S20C steel can be done at 580°C to 680°C for 1 hour per 25 mm of thickness to achieve the desired properties.
