Stainless steel 304, 304L, 316, 316L difference

Chemical composition of 304, 304L316, 316L stainless steel:

304 stainless steel

304 (S30408), 304L (S30403), 316 (S31608), 316L (S31603) are 300 series austenitic stainless steel, these four kinds of stainless steel is currently the most widely used stainless steel materials on the market, the difference between them is as follows:

304 stainless steel is one of the most widely used stainless steel materials, it has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low temperature strength and mechanical characteristics, its stamping, bending and other hot processing good, no heat treatment hardening phenomenon, while 304 stainless steel has no magnetic. The use temperature of 304 stainless steel is between -196-800℃, It is widely used in food processing, storage and transportation, plate heat exchangers, bellows, household goods (1, 2 types of tableware, cabinets, indoor pipelines, water heaters, boilers, bathtub), auto parts (windshield wipers, mufflers, molding products), medical equipment, building materials, chemicals, food industry, agriculture, ship parts and other fields.

The difference between 304L stainless steel and 304 is that the carbon content of 304L stainless steel is lower than 304, and its general characteristics are almost the same as 304, but 304L stainless steel can inhibit the sensitization phenomenon caused by the precipitation of chromium carbide between 500-900℃, improve the sensitivity of intercrystalline corrosion caused by welding, etc. Therefore, the welding performance of 304L stainless steel is better than that of 304 stainless steel, and it is widely used in the production of equipment and parts requiring good comprehensive performance (corrosion resistance and formability), especially for occasions requiring welding.

The difference between 316 stainless steel and 304 is that 2-3% molybdenum Mo element is added to 316 stainless steel, making 316 corrosion resistance and high temperature strength has been greatly improved, theoretically high temperature resistance can reach 1200-1300℃, can be used under more demanding conditions, work hardening (non-magnetic). 316 Stainless steel is mainly used in pulp and paper equipment heat exchangers, dyeing equipment, film washing equipment, pipelines, coastal area building external materials, ropes, CD rods, bolts, nuts, etc.

The difference between 316L stainless steel and 304 is that the carbon content of 316L stainless steel is lower than that of 304, and 2-3% molybdenum Mo element is added at the same time, making it have excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and creep resistance. Due to its excellent pitting resistance, 316L steel can be safely used in halogen ion environments such as Clˉ. 316L stainless steel has good corrosion resistance in the pulp and paper production process, but also resistant to the erosion of the ocean and aggressive industrial atmosphere. Under high temperature conditions, when the concentration of sulfuric acid is lower than 15% and higher than 85%, 316L stainless steel also has a wide range of uses
