What material is S50C?

S50C steel is a high quality medium carbon steel, which is made by electric furnace, open furnace or pure oxygen converter steelmaking process. The steel has the characteristics of uniform microstructure, carbon content (mass fraction, %)>0.4, excellent wear resistance, ductility reduction, easy deformation and cracking quenching, so quenching is extremely important, and must be cooled after tempering to avoid tempering brittleness. The machinability of this kind of carbon steel can be improved by implementing spheroidizing treatment. The steel is usually used after tempering to a hardness of 19~22HRC to increase its cutting performance.
