316 Stainless Steel Plate Finishes
316 stainless steel plate finishes refer to the surface treatments applied to the stainless steel plate to achieve different appearances and properties. The most common finishes for 316 stainless steel plates include:
1. No.1 Finish: This is a hot-rolled, annealed, and pickled finish that is characterized by a dull, rough surface. It is suitable for applications where appearance is not a primary concern, such as structural components.
2. No.2D Finish: Also known as a dull finish, it is achieved by cold rolling, annealing, and pickling the stainless steel plate. It has a smoother and less reflective surface compared to the No.1 finish.
3. No.2B Finish: This is a bright, cold-rolled finish that is commonly used for decorative and architectural applications. It has a smooth, reflective surface but may have visible lines caused by the cold rolling process.
4. No.3 Finish: Also known as a brushed finish, it is achieved by mechanically polishing the stainless steel plate with abrasive belts or brushes. It has a unidirectional satin appearance and is commonly used for decorative purposes.
5. No.4 Finish: This is a general-purpose polished finish that is obtained by polishing the stainless steel plate with finer abrasives than the No.3 finish. It has a more refined and smoother appearance with a low reflectivity.
6. BA (Bright Annealed) Finish: This is a highly reflective, mirror-like finish that is achieved by annealing the stainless steel plate in a controlled atmosphere. It is commonly used for decorative applications, such as automotive trim and appliances.
7. Hairline Finish: This is a finely textured finish that is achieved by sanding the stainless steel plate with progressively finer abrasives. It has a linear, brushed appearance and is commonly used for architectural and decorative purposes.
8. Satin Finish: This is a low-reflective, smooth finish that is achieved by polishing the stainless steel plate with abrasive belts or brushes. It has a soft, matte appearance and is commonly used for architectural and decorative applications.
These finishes can be further customized or combined to achieve specific appearances and properties based on the desired application.
The difference-316/316L
Composition:
- Stainless steel 316 contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum, and small amounts of manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and carbon.
- Stainless steel 316L is a low-carbon version of stainless steel 316, with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. It has similar amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and other elements as stainless steel 316.
Corrosion Resistance:
- Both stainless steel 316 and 316L are highly corrosion-resistant due to the presence of chromium and molybdenum. They can withstand exposure to various corrosive environments, including saltwater, acids, and chemicals.
- Stainless steel 316L, with its lower carbon content, offers even better corrosion resistance than stainless steel 316. It is particularly suitable for applications where welding is involved, as it reduces the risk of sensitization and subsequent corrosion.
Weldability:
- Stainless steel 316 has good weldability, but it can be susceptible to sensitization during welding, which can lead to intergranular corrosion. This is especially true in high-temperature environments.
- Stainless steel 316L has improved weldability compared to stainless steel 316, as the lower carbon content reduces the likelihood of sensitization. It can be welded without the need for post-weld annealing to prevent intergranular corrosion.
