What Is The Difference Between 2205 And 304 Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is increasingly used in modern industry. With its excellent corrosion resistance and strength, it has become an indispensable material in many industries. Do you know the difference between 2205 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel? Let's take a look!

1. Definition:

  • What Is 2205 Stainless Steel?

2205 stainless steel is a composite stainless steel composed of 21% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel-nitrogen alloy.

  • What Is 304 Stainless Steel?

304 is a general-purpose stainless steel, which is widely used to make equipment and parts that require good comprehensive performance (corrosion resistance and formability). In order to maintain the inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel, the steel must contain more than 18% chromium and more than 8% nickel. 304 stainless steel is a grade of stainless steel produced according to the American ASTM standard.

5. Structure And Type

  • 2205 stainless steel: It is a duplex stainless steel, consisting of about 50% austenite and 50% ferrite.

  • 304 stainless steel: It is an austenitic stainless steel whose main structure is austenite.

6.Corrosion Resistance

  • 2205 stainless steel: Due to its high content of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, its corrosion resistance is significantly better than that of 304 stainless steel, especially in chloride-containing environments, it has strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

  • 304 stainless steel: It has good corrosion resistance in general environments, but is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments.

7. Heat Treatment And Welding Properties

  • 2205 stainless steel: Good welding performance, but subsequent processing (such as annealing) is required after welding to maintain the phase balance and mechanical properties of the material.

  • 304 stainless steel: It has good welding performance and does not require heat treatment after welding, but its corrosion resistance may be reduced in high temperature environments.
